Individuals in prolonged or sustained contact with leprosy patients are at an increased risk of getting leprosy themselves. Contact investigation and management, in which contacts of leprosy patients are traced in the community and screened for leprosy, is an important aspect of leprosy control. This usually happens at home or in the community where the leprosy patient spends most time. During contact investigations, contacts are educated and counseled about leprosy and screened for leprosy. Those identified with leprosy are promptly started on treatment and those with no signs and symptoms of the disease are given one single dose of Rifampicin (PEP- Post-exposure prophylaxis) to prevent or reduce chances of getting leprosy in the future.
