Leprosy is a categorised as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD)
Neglected Tropical Diseases affect more than one billion people worldwide, primarily poor populations living in tropical and sub-tropical climates. Poor populations are frequently clustered together geographically and individuals are often afflicted with more than one infection. More than 70 per cent of countries and territories that report the presence of NTDs are low-income economies. NTDs particularly affect those living in remote rural areas, urban slums or conflict zones.
Leprosy has been listed as one of the NTDs since they were categorised in 2003. The latest WHO targets can be found in the WHO Roadmap: NTD_RoadMap_2012 and leprosy is also reported in the London Declaration on NTDs aimed at fighting NTDs. Traditionally, people affected by NTDs have lacked a strong political voice and the diseases have had a low profile and status in public health priorities.
NTD NGO Network (NNN)
The NNN is a global forum for nongovernmental development organisations (NGDOs) working to control or eliminate NTDs such as onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis, trachoma, and leprosy. NGOs are uniquely placed, given their field-based programmes and experience, to assist in reaching the world’s most underserved populations like those suffering from NTDs. The NNN promotes comprehensive approaches that prevent, treat, and manage consequences of diseases that affect the poorest among us. ILEP is a member of the Neglected Tropical Disease NGO Network.
The NNN added its signature to the open letter to the G7 heads of state in March 2015, urging them to support NTDs: Open Letter on NTDs to G7 Heads of State 3.4.15
During their sixth annual meeting in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in September 2015, members of the NNN declared their full and unanimous support for a global indicator for NTDs for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, Target 3.3, reflecting language endorsed by the World Health Organization and the NTD community.
